Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - debi -
I have been diagnosed with a multinodular goiter - which was called Hashimoto's disease. My thyroid panels always come out normal. AND I have a fibroids distorting my uterus to the size of a 4mo pregnancy. Since I have no symptoms from the fibroids, I have been just keeping a watch on them with regular check ups and ultrasounds. We have just moved and the new gyn doctor I've gone to unequivocally says that I need a hysterectomy. Her opinion is that the fibroids fill up my whole pelvic cavity and she can not do a pelvic exam. An ultrasound confirmed that my uterus is large and distorted. The technician could find one ovary and not the other. I was wondering if there's any connection between the fibroids and the thyroid. Do you thing I should consider the Progest E? I am also seeing a Family Practitioner who specializes in Integrative Medicine so I am sure he could monitor me. As for the thyroid, other than a bump on my neck, I have no side effects although I am tired a good bit of the time... no dry hair or skin, I am thin but not skinny, cholesterol is 136, no headaches etc etc. What do you suggest?
Re:Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - Priscilla -
Dear Debi, when the medical tests are normal but you still have obvious hypothyroid symptoms, you probably have the right number of thyroxin molecules, but the iodine may have been replaced by fluorine. This wouldn't show on the medical tests. If your thyroxine holds fluoride, you can detoxify it by taking DMAE, and then eliminate sources of flouride. Drink pure water, no diet cokes, and use non-Fluoride toothpaste. Your cholesterol is way too low, and since cholesterol is the basis for synthesizing hormones, probably you are not making enough estrogens or progesterone. From what you describe, it is likely that progest would be useful. If you take other meds, like thyroid medication, take your progest with a capsule of biotin to protect it. Fibroids sometimes respond well to progesterone, as this hormone regulates tissue proliferation. Molybdenum is usually helpful for reducing fibroids, and you might also have an emotional reason for creating the fibroids that a therapist could help you with.Sometimes it's about a loss of a child, or loss of an interrupted pregnancy, or something like that. I have seen fairly big fibroids recede. They go slowly, but you can certainly check out the options before agreeing to surgery. Best of luck. Priscilla
Re:Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - Timothy Long -   [timothylong@longnaturalhealth.com]
If I were your doctor I would definitly be looking at your thyroid, high estrogen, etc. The fibroids etc can be caused by low thyroid, as can an enlarged or cystic thyroid, ovaries, etc. I would consider Progest E. But you need a health professional to help you review the whole situation and monitor you properly. Dont just start taking things.
Re:Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - Terry Helwig - Lapeer, MI  [sofasurfer@blclinks.net]
I was diagnosed by my ob-gyn as having uterine fibroids. Although they gave me only slight discomfort during my menstrual flow time, with my recent two period, they caused heavy flooding and gushing. Now, I am experiencing inflammation before my period begins. I am taking vitex (chaste tree berry) tincture, and stinging nettle tincture (which stopped the hemorrhaging within 1/2 hour after taking it). Also, I am using natural progesterone cream twice daily to counteract my excess estrogen. As I just turned 46, this is when all the complications began. I realize I am most likely in perimenopause, can I expect herbal medications to shrink these fibroids? Is it okay to continue using the natural progesterone cream throughtout the duration of the month, even while I am flowing? It seems to me, this would have some effect on slowing down the estrogen dominance situation. I have not had any recurrence of spotting since I have been using the natural progesterone cream. I did get some sharp pains in my uterus from the fibroids, seems like my uterus is trying to expel them. In additon, I am drinking 2 -8oz. cups of chapparal tea each night, also, to rid my body of the fibroids. I used this method 10 yrs. ago, when I had breast tumors. Any additional knowledge would be greatly appreciated. What would you recommend to a sister or daughter of your own with uterine fibroids. I did research on nettle - seems that it has been used for CENTURIES in other countries such as India, Germany, and Africa, but not many doctors know about it here. I gave all this information to my ob-gyn, since he is from India, and even gave him print-outs of info on nettle being listed in the Indian Pharmacology books. It says, "Stops uterine hemorrhaging". It was the only thing which worked for me, AFTER the ER at my nearby hospital could do nothing for me, NOR my primary care physician, OR my ob-gyn. Thank God for the health food stores!!! Thank you for reading this. I hope sharing my own experience with the frightening aspect of hemorrhaging will help some other women out there who don't know where to turn, and where some even end up needing blood transfusions. Thank you again. Sincerely, Terry Helwig

I've been experiencing pain in my left abdominal area for about a year and it hasn't gotten any better.I've had several procedures done in which none has cured the pain.they said I had fibroids and they stated I may have had some cysts on my ovaries in which again this pain in my side has caused great discomfort as well as pain and my general family doctor sends me to a gyn,and he can't find nothing outside the fibroids.I'm scared that it may be something else but has not yet been detected and I feel I should probably have a hysterectomy done so the pain will ease up please forward an info.

I have fiberoid tumors on my uterus. I also have severe varicose veins that are requiring treatment. When the veins act up (phlebitis) the pain in my lower abdomen is very troubling and limits my movements. The tumors were discovered during a routine sono on my bladder. My gyn DID not mention them in my last exam. I am thinking about gettting a new gyn. What is your oponion?

For over a year I have been experiencing lower back pain, I done the Physical Therapy route, and have had the chiropractor adjust and tape me with performing deep massages. The severe bloating, gas and pressure I have expierience has had my doctor perform a lower catscan and they found nothing. Finally I remembered in 1993 during a OB/GYN visit that a doctor mentioned he noticed fiberoids, and stated if I was not encountering any problems there was no need to remove them. Recently I had a pelvic ultrasound where several fiberoids where measured at 11.6 centimeters, my doctor recommended I consult a OB/GYN to seek the alternatives available to me. I know individuals have had a hysterrectomy, but today I know there must be different alternatives, can you provide me with these?
Re:Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - Diana - KC  [akadiana@kc.rr.com]
I feel like less of a case since reading this site. I have been gaining weight for almost a year. My LDL's are fine. My HDL's the bottom of where they should be. I have TSH levels that indicate Hyperthyrodism (.35 in November last year; .23 in January; .8 in April and .4 in May), but my symptoms are all hypothyroidism--including the fact that I have multinodular goiter. On May 2, I started what looked like menustral bleeding. I am on day 36 now. But oddly enough -- I'm feeling better. I had a pelvic sonogram today which shows that I have multiple cysts on my ovaries. No one has a clue what is going on and none of the cysts on my thryoid or my ovaries are fibroid. Good luck to you all of you in a similar boat. I hope you find your answers.

I also have a thyroid problem, low blood pressure, low heart rate, low body temperature. I notice that the fibroids and thyroid problems seem to come up together when discussed. Any answers for that? To remove internal cysts you have to take 1/2 teaspoon of honey 3 times a day. This will destroy them. I used to have the cyst problem also. I'd like to know stats on how many people besides myself have had multiple pregnancies and/or c-sections. Thank you.

I also have fibroids & a multi-nodule non-toxic goiter. I didn't realize there was a connection between the two. My goiter does not currently bother me but I would like to know a natural way to shrink or reduce the size rather than surgery or radiation. Goiter isn't a topic discussed very much.

I have always had periods that would last for about 3 weeks and skip 2 to 3 months at a time. When I was younger the pill corrected these problems but I am 29 now and I have had two live births with HELLP syndrome complaction with both and one miscarrige and one tublar pregancy. I had my tubes tied two years ago and had been told I have uterine fibriod cysts over 2 cent. along with this I am passing blood clots bigger than the size of a silver dollar and have been bleeding for 3 weeks. I have been on the pill for six months to help with my flow and pain but it is just not working anymore and my doctor seems not to be really concerned with this. I need to know what some of my options or and what I need to do to stop this.

I'm 54 and I was told that I have fiberoids in my uterus. The Dr. told me that my uterus was the size of a woman 4 months pregnant, which I'm not. Yes I have pain in my sides at times and my stomach is very bloaty. I have no bleeding just pain so what does this mean is it something serious or what?
Re:Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - Timothy Long -   [timothylong@longnaturalhealth.com]
Yes, of course it is serious. Find yourself a good holistic doctor. You will need to support your thyroid and adrenals. And perhaps balance your hormones. There are herbs and a proper diet that will help shrink fibroids too. Again, thyroid support can be very important. This is usually a condition of excess estrogen, which can lead to many other and more serious problems.

I am ready to try anything...especially more natural forms of healing. Any suggestions would be welcome. thanks.

Re:Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - Barbara Laurie - Bronx, NY  [barbaralaurie@hotmail.com]
I was diagnosed sometime ago with Fibroids. I have one in particular that has really gotten large. I am 41 years old and I have already been examined by a doctor who suggests surgery. My decision is further complicated by the fact that I have a sickle cell trait and my sometimes heavy bleeding has caused extreme anemia. It has throw the GYN office that has examined me into an uproar. And, I don't have ANY medical benefits. Can someone out there give me some holistic feedback on what roots and natural remedies I can use to help with this dilemma. I won't let them do surgery because they say that there's no guarantee that the fibroid won't come back...so why take the risk if it's not a definitely going to heal me. On top of that you know everybody always talks about just "get it done" without understanding the consequences. I am in a category that some GYN's feel is the age of no childbirth...so they assume that I'll want to (if I had to) do a partial hysterectomy...since I'm at that age...what age is that? who says that I'm still not going to have a baby...and even if I decide not to have a child this late in life...outside of these fibroids I have nothing wrong with my girly parts...why should I have to get rid of them...please somebody give me some serious holisitic remedies...it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, my mom had uterine fibroids and underwent surgery. She has a thyroid problem too. Now after having surgery, she has gained a lot of weight and her blood pressure also started increasing. She saw an OB/GYN and she gave her some blood pressure pills which I don't know the name off. Her blood pressure has now gone down. It was 200/100 2 months ago but now it has gone down to 130/90. Her weight didn't go down so she started seeing this new doctor who told her that she has swelling all over her body and gave her meds for that plus vitamin injections. She has started taking the medicines but she feels really weak and sometimes has difficulty even walking. After taking the medicines, she feels tired all the time. Is that normal. Please reply as soon as possible as i am very worried about her.

I am 54 yrs old, have regular yearly appointments with my gynacologist & untrasounds every 6 months for a uterine fiberoid. Every time I have an ultrasound done the fiberoid is a bit larger - (the GYN states it is about the size of a 4 month developing fetus, but it is a fiberoid). The doctor states that as I become more menopausal and my body starts producing less estrogen there is a change that the fiberoid MAY shrink, because the fiberoid feeds on the estrogen. I am not having any bad symptoms such as pain or excessive bleeding as of yet, the fiberoid is just there and continues growing. The doctor states that the only other option is surgery- a hysterectomy. I do not want to have this surgery. I hope you can recommend some natural methods to shrink this fiberoid. Please help!! Thank you.

October 2003 I was diagnosed with Fibroid Tumors. I had the characteristics of a woman 5 months pregnant. I was experiencing heavy bleeding, enlarged stomach, extensive pain, and I was anemic. My husband urged me to look at alternative solutions. I started on a nutritional approach changing my diet and supplying my body with more natural nutrition. Today I no longer have heavy bleeding, I no longer look pregnant, and I am pain free. Unexpected bonuses by changing my diet, I no longer have Restless Leg Syndrome, I am no longer cold all of the time, and I am full of energy. Please feel free to contact me if you would like any support, I am thankful I had the support from my husband without him I am sure I would have fell into the trap of thinking I only had one option...a hysterectomy. God Bless, Vickie

My uterus is tilted back a lot. I have fibroids. I have blood in my urine. usually my uterus tilts back when I am preg. afterward I pops back. I lost a baby three years ago and it is still tilted. I take herbs and over the counter drugs. I find if your poor the doctors want to give you a histerectomy. It is quick. They tell you that if they remove the fibroids they grow back. The fibroids they remove do not grow back. The small fibroids they missed continue to grow.things greasy foods and caffeine. and estergen can make them grow. Why don't doctors give us a list of dos and do not's when they first notice the fibroids. just because most ladies over 35 have them. I took the dopro shot. It made the fibroids from my pregancy continue to grow.My doctor checked my thyroid it was fine. I also have fibriods in my breast. I think I have them in my intestine also. On top of every thing I come from one of those cancer families.

I had a myomectomy, initially they wanted to take the fiberoid out by keyhole surgery, but the it was so large that they had to cut me open (C-section style), to remove the fiberoid. I was 25 years old and 6 weeks away from my wedding day. Fiberoids did grow back, not as large as the one removed but large enough to cause discomfort. I have since had a boy 8lbs 13oz and a girl 10lbs!! Both big babies. It was painful carrying them towards the end of each pregnancy and I did have cesearians each time. I am now 4 months pregant and my tummy is very large and bloated. I suffer from IBS too. I have taken herbal drops which have calcified the larger fiberoids, but I am still worried about how things will work out with this pregnancy. Two years ago I did have a miscarriage at 11 weeks. This may not be related to fiberoids, but who knows. I believe thyroid and fiberoids are linked and everytime I have had my thyroid checked it is said to be fine. I think I have an underactive thyroid as I find it hard to lose weight and I wish I could have access to a reliable diet or medication to help me.

Hi! Yesterday during my 6 month visit to my GYN I was told that my enlarged uterus was the size of a softball (10 cm) and that I also had large fibroids. He suggested a partial hysterectomy, but I found a websire that gave me much more information about what I needed answers to. I hope it's helpfull to any of you who are going through what I'm experiencing. Good luck to you all! and feel free to email me! :) Lisa From: New York

I am 35 yrs., was healthy till i dignosed with fibroids in my uterus. The size of the wall of the uterus is too large as per my health care provider and i am taking madication for one month (some harmonal tabs for 21 days). I dont have any pain or other symptoms other than i had a high flow with big clots this time and that was only the first time. Do i need any surgery or can it be cured by the medication? I am very much scared of having my next cycle if it is really bad like before.
Re:Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - Dawn - Atlanta  [vipassit@yahoo.com]
Hello Debi, I wanted to share my short story. In my early 20's I recall going for an exam from my doctor. He said there are a couple of fibroids but they were so small I should not worry. Within 1 year I was back in his office because of ongoing pain. He put me on Lupron for more than 3 months. The worst thing a doctor could do and then repeat the cycle shortly thereafter. The biggest side affect of Lupron are brittle bones to say the least. Anyway over the years they have shrunk and grew again. I've had UAE and other procedures however the beginning of this year I was introduced to colonics. I immediately saw the change in my body and my emotional health. My own personal experience with this changed my life. Also after researching I found a Chinese herb that further assists me in the shrinking of these fibroids and eliminating monthly cramps and bring a balance to my hormones. It’s called Gongliuqing Jianonang. I just recently started selling this herb. It’s my miracle herb. If you would like more info just email me I will be happy to share this with anyone.

I'm 33 years old and my gyn has know about the tumors for 4 years now. I heard when you have surgery it cuts your chance of pregancy to 50% and a 2nd surgery will cut that to 10% is that try?
Re:Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - Judy - Denver, CO
1-21-06 When I was in my teens I was diagnose with a cyst on one of my ovaries. Being young I didn't have a cue what this meant nor did I understand what a cyst was but I did understand the meaning of pain. So I was operated on and the cyst was removed. Years later I began to have a different kind of pain in my lower abdomen and after several visits to the doctor I found that I had a lot of scar tissue from the first operation. By this time I was about 32 years old, married and wanting to have a baby. So back under the knife I went. Yes I had a second operation which was called an elective surgery; this was to remove the scar tissue I got from the first operation. All of the scar tissue was removed and a year later I was Pregnant. In my third month of pregnancy the doctor told me that I had a fibroid in my uterus, growing at the same rate that my baby was and if it kept on growing they would have to operate but I said no! Than they said but your baby won't have enough room to grow if the fibroid is allow to continue! The Doctor could not give me guaranties that my baby would be unharmed from the operation but he knew this would be the right thing for me (in his mine). Again I said no and I let the fibroid stay where it was and my baby stayed where he was and I delivered a 7.5 healthy baby boy (without any additional surgery. Today I still have that same fibroid inside me and it is about the size of a grapefruit they say. But I don't have pain from it I am 54 yrs old. And sure the Doctor's would love to operate on me again and sure they would love to give me a hysterectomy because after all they say you’re not looking to have anymore children. Well I say that's beside the point. Soon I will stop having a period and yes I still have a period but it only last for about a good full day and then hardly anything. At this time I am looking for my fibroid to shrink naturally by itself or if possible a natural remedy. Sometime we may give a Doctor too much authority over our bodies and before we know it we don't have enough left in it to help our selves. Remember Medicine is "BIG" business. “ Be careful who you give your business to”.

Are there any foods that I should avoid?

I am 52 and have recently been diagnosed with a uterine fibroid approx 4 cm. I have over the last week been taking Relacore and the effects on my stress level are very signifcant. This week I have been experiencing pain in my lower abdomine and I noticed on the fine print, on the Relacore bottle that one of the overdose effects (I am not overdosing though) is increased estrogen levels. This would not be good for the fibroid, I would guess. Is there anything in the Relacore that I should be concerned about. This might be just a coinsidence.

I have enjoyed reading all the different stories and mine is very similar. I am 51 and was diagnoised with uterine fibroids. One is the size of a marble and the other is the size of a golf ball. My symptoms are: lower back pain, abdomine enlarged, bladder pressure, painful periods. The gyn told me to have a hysterectomy. I am getting a second opinion the end of March. I did not know these grow back. Has anyone out there had this surgery and would like to share if it was successful?

I can't believe so many women are going through the same symptoms and all most are having their doctors tell them completely different ways how to deal with their symptoms. I too, am having consistent vaginal bleeding since Jan. been put on progesterone, stopped bleeding for a little. Told that I have cervical dysplasia, uterine wall thicker, like a 3 month pregnancy. Reg. doc tells me my thyroid numbers aren't high enough to be put on thryoid medicine. But if you do a little research you will find vaginal bleeding and your thyroid symptoms go hand in hand. I am furious that there is not a more universal knowledge, on women and fibroid cysts, menopause and hypothyroidism - it seems we all have to figure it out for ourselves. I'm on my way to my health food store and am going to consult my acupuncturist for chinese herbs - seems to me that natural way is the most secure and safest. Forget western medicine!!

I was diagnosed (30 yrs old) w/uterine fibroid (4cm) a year ago. With several visits to the gyn it had enlarged to almost 6CM. That's when I decided to start doing some serious research (surgery wan definatly not an option). I became a vegetarian/vegan.....no meat (I still eat fish though), no dairy products and I tried to kick my caffeine addiction. I subtituted dairy products for Soy products and I don't miss eating meat(not even chicken). So far my fibroids has shrinked and I don't have the troublesome discomfort I used to have. I alo take vitex, chaste berry tree and dandelion root to regulate a my liver. recommendation for read: The Tao of Good Health, Sex and Longevity, By Daniels

I was diagnosed with fibroids in 2004 (at 31 years old) and they made me extremely ill, I had a uterine fibroid embolization, they are now gone, haven't returned, no hysterectomy! I then developed a multi-nodular goiter and hypo symtoms (but also severe isnsomnia and a hyper-fatigue)w/T3 and T4 testing in normal ranges, symptoms got much wprse over 18 months- finally found a dr who suggested adrenal testing, after seeing 6 or more docs who told me there was no help for my symptoms and I should just have surgery on the multi-nodular and remove it. Apparently, adrenal problems can cause all manner of other probs--if you have fibroids and goiter, get your dr to do adrenal testing or find a new doc who will!!!

Re:Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - Mary - Dallas  [mm-stevenson@hotmail.com]
I was recently diagnosed with both a lo(high) thyroid. There are a lot of resources on the web to help. With the fibriods I found out that there is a hormore (don't know name) that will shrink fibriod and then if needed laproscopic cromyolysis (freezing) of the fibriod that deprives it of its blood supply. As far as the thyroid goes try to get a full comprehensive hormone panel/thyroid/adrenal panel done through a group like the menopause clinic of america. I believe the cost is $300. but is worth it if you can get an evaluation on where your hormones are and get on a prescription of the real natural bio-identical hormones that they prescribe. Read Suzanne Somers book about this, she explains it more indepth. As far as natural remedies to get rid of fibriods I'm not aware of anything that works. Check out hystersisters.com ladies. You can get information to help you there. Get yourself on some good insurance and make sure you have a good support network because you are going to need it if your problems get worse and everyone is different. My mother had a surgical menopause (BAD) after six kids; my mom-in-law had 2 kids and no problems whatsoever (so she says) with the change but some are lucky, some are not. I'm a very unlucky one as I had no children and had problems with cysts, etc. all my life. So count your blessings, remember to stop and smell the flowers along the way. Pass it on. Peace

Re:Uterine Fibroids and Hypothyroidism - Irene - Alaska  [idbogue@yahoo.com]
To those with fibroids and thyroid condition: I've had Graves disease most of my life, and also had uterine fibroids. My gyn and I tried hormone therapies and diet in an attempt to regulate the fibroids, but nothing worked. My Dr. told me fibroids are usually hereditary and get worse with age. My symptoms were fairly severe for about 20 years, and I finally had a partial hysterectemy (ovaries and cervix left intact). Frankly, after years of extreme pain and excessive bleeding, my iron count was chronically low and I couldn't take the pain anymore. The fibroids were embedded under the surface of the uterine lining and could not be cut away. The surgery was the best thing I've ever done. My husband says I'm like a new person, much happier and easier to get along with. An unfortunate side affect from the advil I took over those years to deal with the pain, is that once I stopped taking it, I lost most of my natural abilitiy to create antihistimines. Now I have allergies and asthma. If your fibroid symtoms are similar, and a proper annual exam cannot be performed to test for cancer, I highly recommend a partial hysterectemy. It can be done with laproscopic incisions, which means recovery is minimal compared to other types of hysterectemies. You will be glad to be done with all the problems and hassles, and your hormones should remain similar to pre-surgery with your ovaries intact. Good luck with your choices, and for the thyroid, I highly recommend you look up books by Mary Shomon for the most recent effective treatments, both natural and allopathic. Whatever you do, do NOT have radioactive iodine. There are better treatments available today, including thyroid embolization - a new technique now performed in China and Canada that has had great success and is minimally invasive.

I am 33 yrs old. I was diagnosed by my ob-gyn as having uterine fibroids. They give me discomfort during my menstrual flow time, with my recent periods; they caused heavy flooding and gushing. Now, I am experiencing inflammation before my period begins. I did get some sharp pains in my uterus from the fibroids. Doctors say I should probably have a hysterectomy done so the pain will ease up. I had been diagnosed with fibroids, the pain is very unbearable, the bleeding is getting worst, and should I have a hysterectomy. Now I was told no more fibroids but still have major irregular bleeding with clots as large a golf balls at times. My heavy bleeding has caused extreme anemia where I have had blood transfusions. I would like to get pregnant but it's not happening. I am always in severe pain in my abdomen and in my lower back. I am always bloated, frequent urination, and bleeding between periods, blood in my urine, UTI's. I am in pain all the time - 5 days out of the week I am on pain med. Some days it is unbearable. I took the depo provera shot.

Ive just read a Debi's thread stating that she has hypothyroidism and only one ovary, me too, I was amazed as I had a scan in 2005 and wasnt informed of the loss, Ive had hypothyroidism since I was 15 months old.

I've been doing research into this as well and in addition to what has been mentioned, I've been review research by Dr. Brownstein and Dr. Abraham. All of these conditions are also associated with iodine deficiency. I am on a low dose now and feel better than I have in years! www.drbrownstein.com
