Should I eat meat or be a vegetarian?
-Jennifer
Basic Dietary Suggestions
“Should I eat meat or be a vegetarian?” This is a commonly asked question. Foremost it is an individual and personal decision. It is best to decide it considering your own individual biological needs, not just philosophical, intellectual or religious/spiritual considerations. I believe whatever diet best strengthens your body and mind, boosts your energy and immunity, and enables you to fulfill your life’s purpose is the right diet for you. Your personal dietary needs can also change during different times and periods throughout your life. You need to honor your own body.
It makes sense to consider your genes, ancestors, what your family has eaten for generations, the climate you live in, the best food choices available, etc., though above all, eat what makes your body strong. What good is a weak body? I have spoken with numerous people who have tried to become vegetarians. Many at first felt good, usually due not only to eliminating meat, but stopping to eat all kinds of junk foods and drinks that were detrimental to their health. The body welcomes a break now and then from the usual diet. The person will usually feel an energy boost as a result. But in the long run, many people find out that their bodies are showing signs of degeneration and lack of nutrition, especially fats and proteins.
Soy, commonly touted as a protein substitute, is ill advised and can cause many health problems. Vegetarian’s commonly complain of wasting muscle, hair loss, skin problems, eye problems, digestive problems, low thyroid, hormonal problems, PMS, chronic fatigue, low energy, mental fatigue and allergies. Many of these problems don’t develop until after a few years. I have helped numerous people recover from health problems caused by vegetarian and other ill-advised diets.
It is also not necessary to ‘diet’ to lose weight. In fact it is usually detrimental to the dieter’s long-term health and permanent weight loss. I have a lot of success helping people to lose weight wisely, and keeping it off, while teaching them to eat well for life.
There are also many people who over-eat meat and animal foods, often of low quality. This too causes many health problems. Overall, I suggest balance, by finding and following your individual body’s needs.
Important factors to always consider are: Does your body or diet contain the proper enzymes needed to digest the food you eat? Is the meat (eggs, dairy, fish, etc.) you are eating healthy organic meat of high quality or is it contaminated, contain chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, etc.? Are you being careful not to fry or burn your foods and oils? Are you eating high quality fats and oils avoiding vegetable oils and fats that are rancid? [Cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil, organic sweet unsalted butter, ghee, and non-hydrogenated coconut oil are best] Are you avoiding excess sugars, junk foods, soft drinks, and caffeine? Drinking plenty of purified water (without chlorine and fluoride) daily? Eating a wide variety of vegetables and fruits, and being sure to buy as much organic produce free of pesticides and other contaminants? If so, you are off to a very good start towards eating a diet that is preventative and promotes longevity and optimum health.
What is a true Naturopath?
-Roger Hammond
"Although the term Naturopathy originated in the late 19th Century, the art can be traced back through Germany into Greece, to Hippocrates himself, and even beyond. There have always been people who understood that healing will occur naturally in the human body, if it is given what it truly needs --- proper diet, pure water, fresh air, sunlight, exercise, and rest. For these people, the emphasis has not been on finding a disease and killing it, but rather on helping the body establish its own state of good health. Today, these people are known as naturopaths. True naturopaths recognize that allopathic health care is, at times, necessary. They also know that many people can maintain good health through the use of Naturopathy.
In determining the root cause of a client's problems true naturopaths do not diagnose or treat disease, but instead focus on health and education. They teach clients how to create an internal and an external environment that is conducive to good health, enabling their clients to make their own choices." -- This excellent definition was quoted from The Coalition For Natural Health (see our 'Links' page).
What can be done for sluggish bowels?
-Lynn
Sluggish bowels are often a symptom of a number of other health problems. It is important to heal the underlying problem, not just take laxatives (drug store variety or natural).
You can try a natural herbal formula for this problem (there are some choices in my catalog), though, be sure to address the root cause of the problem. In many cases the original cause is poor digestion due to a poor diet. This is a common problem. The American diet weakens the pancreas, and overloads the liver and intestinal tract. People with this problem often feel bloating and heaviness after eating animal products, dairy or fatty foods. It is a good idea to look a little deeper to find out what is causing the sluggishness. The 24 Hour Urinalysis is tremendous for this purpose. It will show what foods are not being properly digested. It then can be determined which enzyme formula is needed to assist breaking down the food which will help eliminate the problem.
There are many other problems besides constipation that can be helped with digestive enzymes. People have also had good results with diarrhea, heartburn, skin rashes, allergies, weak or falling hair, brittle nails, fatigue, muscle weakness, etc. Many people have reported to me their successes using this simple Urinalysis test, along with Dr. Loomis' Thera-zyme formulas.
There are other factors to consider when people have bowel problems. Diet plays a large role. Is the person eating enough fruits and vegetables? Is junk food being eaten? Is enough fresh water being consumed? Is there enough fiber in the diet? What about exercise? Is the thyroid, liver and gallbladder functioning properly? There are so many individual factors to consider, it is best to consult and work with a holistic health professional.
Long Natural Health now offer the excellent all orgainic-herbal Re-Nue Colon Complete. This is great for daily use for people with sluggish bowels. It can also be used at higher doses for colon cleansing. Usually when there are colon problems there is also liver congestion. Therefore I recommnend using Re-Nue Liver Revive along with Colon Complete.
I read that adult women should take 1500 mg's of calcium a day. Should I take this much?
-Patty Armstrong
This is a good example of the 'one fits all' mentality in health today. There are many factors to consider first. Each person's individual health has to be taken into account, along with diet, digestion, nutritional and hormonal balances. The 24 Hour Urinalysis Test determines if the person is digesting and assimilating their food and nutrients, this is very important. Natural thyriod support can play a role in preventing bone loss and even rebuilding bone mass. Mineral balances and the type of calcium used has to be considered as well. It is a crime that advertising convinces people to take supplements that can harm them. Did you know that excess calcium and mineral imbalances are one of the biggest causes of aging and early death? It's a crime that health professionals do not educate themselves better. The result of this kind of generalized health information is that people end up taking lots of the wrong kind of calcium, large amounts of synthetic vitamins, super B complexes, etc. People have no idea how they are harming themselves.
The best thing to do is, consult a qualified holistic health professional to find out what your individual body needs. If you are taking a calcium supplement, be sure it contains high quality ingredients and is properly balanced with magnesium. Magnesium oxide for instance, is not easily assimilable and can irritate the intestional walls. I would not use apartates. Citrate is fine. I prefer our BioNativus Liquid Cal-Mag-Zinc. It is very bioavailable and has vitamin D and all the trace minerals. It is high in magnesium. If you prefer a pill, the Calcigard is also very good. It has calcium citrate and magnesium citrate along with vitamin D. .
Sometimes magnesium is more important than taking calcium. And it is important to use a quality vitamin D, in order to assimilate the calcium.
Should I follow Atkin's Diet to lose weight?
-Theresa Quinn
It is not a good idea to follow any strict diet to lose weight or for any other reason. Though, some of the basic ideas of the Atkin Diet are good. You need to find out what works for you, personally. Everyone is different, has different needs, a different metabolism, genes, etc.
I will outline here the basics of losing weight that pertain to everyone: Cut out all junk food. Junk food is high in sugar and simple carbohydrates, which are the main dietary causes of excessive weight. Alcohol too is fattening.
Another big cause of weight gain is a suppressed thyroid. Excess estrogen suppresses the thyroid. This comes from birth control pills, HRT, soy food, commercial meat, poultry and dairy products (and even organic chicken raised on soy and corn). Overall, eat organic foods and you will avoid a lot of estrogen and estrogenic compounds, like pesticide residues. Another major cause of suppressing the thyroid is polyunsaturate oils. Examples are margarine, soy, safflower, sunflower, corn, and nut oils. So stick to real, sweet organic unsalted butter, extra virgin olive oil, and natural coconut oil. Of course if you are trying to lose weight go light on the butter. Coconut oil will actually increase your metabolism and help you lose weight. Eat plenty of vegetables, and eat whole fruits. Be sure to have some form of concentrated protein at each meal. Remember, it is the sugars and carbohydrates that cause the excess weight, not the protein and healthy fats. Of course, don't cook any foods at high temperatures for too long. Never fry oil or fats, and don't hard boil your eggs. Taking plant digestive enzymes also works wonders. The 24 HR Urinalysis in my catalog will help you determine which digestive formula and other supplements will help you. It will also help you balance your body's nutrition and metabolism. If you really want to succeed, I would suggest setting up an In-depth Health Consultation. This will allow us to tailor an individual health program specifically for your personal needs and health goals.
How do I know you aren't just another company only interested in selling products? How can I trust the quailty of your products and do they work?
-Sally Trenton
It is a very fair question. I have been a health practitioner for over twenty years. I learned early on that it REALLY MATTERS what products you use, and the majority are so-so products. Many I would not put in my body. So I began to do a lot of research about products and companies. I made it my business to be sure my clients were using the very best products available and products that really do what they promise. I insist that my products be made from all- natural organic sources whenever possilbe. When I find a new and better product, I easily replace what I have in my catalog. That bothers some people. But I only want to offer the best. I have thousands of satisfied customers. I have always been personally involved with every aspect of Long Natural Health. I make all the decisions of what we sell and what we don't. Every customer and every interested customer can speak to me personally by phone or contact me by email anytime. I know it is rare, but I really do care about the health of each and everyone using my products. All products sold at Long Natural Health I guarantee to be safe, are made from the highest quality ingredients, and they will give wonderful results.

Should I use unsaturated oil or coconut oil?
-Donna
Dr. Ray Peat says:
"When the oils are stored in our tissues, they are much warmer, and more directly exposed to oxygen than they would be in the seeds, and so their tendency to oxidize is very great. These oxidative processes can damage enzymes and other parts of cells, and especially their ability to produce energy. The enzymes which break down proteins are inhibited by unsaturated fats; these enzymes are needed not only for digestion, but also for production of thyroid hormones, clot removal, immunity, and the general adaptability of cells. The risks of abnormal blood clotting, inflammation, immune deficiency, shock, aging, obesity, and cancer are increased. Thyroid [hormones] and progesterone are decreased.
"Since the unsaturated oils block protein digestion in the stomach, we can be malnourished even while "eating well." There are many changes in hormones caused by unsaturated fats. Their best understood effect is their interference with the function of the thyroid gland. Unsaturated oils block thyroid hormone secretion, its movement in the circulatory system, and the response of tissues to the hormone. Coconut oil is unique in its ability to prevent weight-gain or cure obesity, by stimulating metabolism. It is quickly metabolized, and functions in some ways as an antioxidant."
